Degraded Soils Worsen Global Water Crisis

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Over one-fifth of drinking water distributed in 2011 by Prazské vodovody a kanalizace (PVK), Prague’s water utility, was lost before reaching customers, according to new figures from the water operator.

Russian Investors Battle Town in Ukraine

Ukraine, KREMATORSK (OOSKAnews Corre...) — The town of Krematorsk, in eastern Ukraine, is battling a group of Russian investors for control of its local water utility.

The controversy started at the end of last year, when the Krematorsk Town Council voted to annul its lease agreement with a mysterious consortium of Moscow-based investors, known as NII IVOV.

Local Utility Challenges Russian Federation

Russia, ORENBURG (OOSKAnews Corre...) — The prosecutor in Russia’s Orenburg district found that the local vodokanal (water utility) illegally increased water tariffs for consumers last year, despite a freeze imposed by the central government. The case is being eagerly followed by water utilities across Russia that are keen to increase their prices to keep up with sharply increasing costs.

Torun Waterworks Plans $26.5 Million USD in Infrastructure Projects

Poland, TORUN (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Local water utility Torunskie Wodociagi (Torun Waterworks) this month announced it would invest $26.5 million USD in a number of water and sanitation infrastructure projects. 

The company plans to modernize the sewage treatment plant and expand and overhaul the water supply and sewage network in the city of Torun. 

Kazakh Clean Water Program Failing

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov says the country’s Ak Bulak (Clean Water) program is a “good” one. But at a meeting with other officials this month, he acknowledged its shortcomings, particularly problems with urban water utilities.

Turkmenistan Builds New Water Reservoir

TURKMENISTAN, ASHGABAT (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Turkmenistan started building a new water reservoir in the northern part of the country earlier this month.

The new reservoir will be located near Konya-Urgench, a town of about 30,000 people in Dashoguz province, just south of the border with Uzbekistan, near the left bank of the Amu Darya River.

Cold Weather Forces Azersu to Increase Pressure

BAKU (Local Press Report) — Due to cold weather, Azerbijani national water operator OJSC Azersu increased the pressure of its supplied water by 1.5 cubic meters a second. Azersu spokesman Anar Jabrayilli said, “In all 11 central water reservoirs of Azersu there are currently 600 cubic meters of water that provides regular water supply to the population.

Bulgaria Warns Turkey, Greece Over Dam Overflows

SOFIA (Local Press Report) — Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry has sent a note warning the authorities of Turkey and Greece about the overflowing of major water dams on Bulgarian territory. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed Greek and Turkish authorities that the Ivailovgrad water reservoir and the Studen Kladenetz water reservoir will begin to overflow.

Tallinna Vesi Stock Rises From Court Inaction

TALLINN (Local Press Report) — Estonia’s biggest water utility AS Tallinna Vesi saw its stock rise by 7.1 percent in the last 21 months after the Tallinn Administrative Court kept suspended an order by the competition authority to cut the company’s tariffs until a final ruling was made.

Kazakhstan to Invest $520 Million USD This Year in Water

ASTANA (Local Press Report) — Kazakhstan announced plans earlier this month to implement projects with a total worth of $520 million USD this year as part of the state program for water supply systems development.

Romania to Spend $210 Million USD on Water, Wastewater

BUCHAREST (Local Press Report) — Romania’s tourism ministry announced plans to pay an estimated $210 million USD for wastewater treatment and water supply systems in 12 counties, tender notices showed.

EU Loans Albania $107 Million USD for Infrastructure Projects

TIRANA (Local Press Report) — The European Union announced earlier this month that it will provide more than $107 million USD in aid to Albania over the next two years for infrastructure projects and reforms. A statement from the EU office in Tirana said the aid will fund road projects, water treatment, farm competitiveness and social inclusion of the country’s Roma community, as well as justice and education programs.

Russian Scientists Drill Into Lake Vostok

ST. PETERSBURG (Local Press Report) — Russian scientists have reported success in their quest to drill into Lake Vostok, a huge body of liquid water buried under the Antarctic ice. It is the first time such a breakthrough has been made into one of the more than 300 sub-glacial lakes known to exist on the White Continent. Researchers believe the lake can give them some fresh insights into the frozen history of Antarctica.

Turkmenistan Starts Building Mini-Water Plants

TURKMENISTAN, ASHGABAT (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Turkmenistan started building small-capacity water treatment plants throughout the country this month as part of a program that provides clean drinking water to small settlements.

Vilniaus Vandenys Launches New Sludge, Biogas Facility

Lithuania, VILNIUS (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Vilniaus Vandenys plans to start operating a new sludge drying plant by middle of the year.

The utility is already testing various systems at the facility. 

The water and sewerage company treats some 113,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily. 

Some of the sludge produced during the treatment process is used to produce fertilizer. 

Polish Consortium Wins Supply, Sewage Network Project in Jelenia Gora

Poland, JELENIA GORA (OOSKAnews Corre...) — A consortium led by Polish construction companies Egbud and Buskopol won the $7.6 million contract to modernize and expand the water supply and sewage networks in Jelenia Gora.

The latest investment will be co-financed by a grant from the European Union Infrastructure and Environment operational program, local water utility PWiK Wodnik said.

Odessa Investigates Corruption, Embezzlement in Sewage Treatment Project

Ukraine, ODESSA (OOSKAnews Corre...) — The regional prosecutor’s office of the Odessa region opened a criminal investigation at the end of January into the construction of a sewage treatment and deep-water release facility. 

It suspects corruption and embezzlement to be behind the loss of $5.6 million USD in public funds.

DUSHANBE (Local Press Report) — State Unitary Enterprise Khojagiyu Manziliyu Kommunali is inviting tenders for water meters, appurtenances and fittings, and manholes for the South Tajikistan Water Rehabilitation Project.

Azersu Announces Tender for Supply, Sewer Systems

BAKU (Local Press Report) — National water operator Azersu has announced a tender for a contractor to build water supply systems and a sewer in the cities of Gabala and Shemakha. The work is part of a national water supply and sewerage services project carried out jointly with the World Bank. The tender is being issued for two lots.

Bosnia to Get $14.5 Million USD for Plava Voda Supply Network

SARAJEVO (Local Press Report) — The Council of Europe Development Bank approved a $14.5 million USD project to co-finance, along with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, construction  of  the  Plava Voda  regional  water  supply  network.

Kumtor Gold Mine Ignores Environmental Laws

BISHKEK (Local Press Report) — Kumtor, Kyrgyzstan’s largest gold mine, routinely ignores national environmental legislation, according to two new reports. One report suggested the mining operations could have a far-reaching, detrimental effect on Central Asia’s water supply. The mine is a major source of revenue for the country, and a major source of concern for local residents in Issyk-Kul Province.

Dafora Signs $2.1 Million USD Contract With Apa Ternavei Mari

BUCHAREST (Local Press Report) — Romanian drilling and construction services group Dafora signed a $2.1 million USD contract with local water utility Apa Tarnavei Mari to build its headquarters, as well as carrying out other construction and upgrade works. The project is to be completed in 16 months. The other work will expand and overhaul the water and wastewater systems in several regions in Sibiu county.

Minister Meets With German Investors Over Irrigation Channel

BUCHAREST (Local Press Report) — Romanian Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara met with German investors on the 190-kilometer Siret-Baragan irrigation channel project. The project will cost an estimated $4.5 billion USD. The channel will irrigate 700,000 to 1 million hectares of land in southeastern Romania at very low cost with no pumping needed.

GE Names Kevin Cassidy as General Manager

pa, TREVOSE (Local Press Report) — GE named Kevin Cassidy general manager of chemical and monitoring solutions in the water and process technologies department of GE Power & Water.
Cassidy, who is based in Singapore, previously served as general manager of the Asia Pacific region for GE’s water business. 

Polish Municipality Plans $10 Million USD Project to Modernize Sewage Network

Poland, SRODA WIELKOPOLSKA (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Aiming to modernize its sewage network, the municipality of Sroda Wielkopolska is planning a $10.1 million USD water infrastructure project.

It will modernize some 13.26 kilometers of the municipal sewage network, and install another 300 meters of new pipelines. Some 90 percent of Sroda Wielkopolska’s residents will have access to the sewage network as a result. 

Ukraine Fears Cholera Outbreak Following Sewage Plant Accident

Ukraine, KYIV (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Ukraine’s Ministry of the Environment is warning of a possible mass outbreak of cholera following a serious accident at a sewage treatment plant on the Dnieper River earlier this month. Settlements downstream have been put on alert. However, the worst effects are not expected until the spring thaw, due in March or April. 

Despite Reported Success, South Kazakhstan’s Water Program Leaves Some Behind

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (OOSKAnews Corre...) —  Authorities in South Kazakhstan are reporting success in completing the national drinking water program, but new construction projects and townships in several parts of the province have no access to the water supply and wastewater systems that are supposedly being built. 

Ukraine Prosecutes Donetskgor Firm for Illegal Supply

Ukraine, KYIV (OOSKAnews Corre...) — Ukrainian authorities in January continued their crackdown on water supply and wastewater violations. In one of the latest such incidents, the government commission overseeing the effort fined wholesaler Donetskprodtorg for stealing water, after an investigation revealed a hidden pipeline connected to the water supply on the neighboring premises.

Bulgarian Government Touts Successes With EU-Funded Projects

Toddler Death Highlights Serious Infrastructure Problems in Russia

MOSCOW, Russia (OOSKAnews Corre...) —  The death of an 18-month-old toddler in the city of Bryansk, southwest of Moscow, has plunged the Russian water industry into controversy.

The toddler died on January 8, after a collapsing area of pavement dropped the stroller pushed by his mother into a corroded sewage canal.
