Kushva Sewage Leak Highlights Problems With Prison Labor

During the night of April 18 the city of Kushva in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Region suffered a catastrophic sewage leak. The immediate cause was the effects of the spring thaw, although residents have since been quick to accuse the local water company of negligence in allowing the pipes to degrade. The accident saw a torrent of industrial and domestic wastewater that continued for several hours before an emergency repair crew managed to stem the flow. The spill flooded part of the town, forcing residents out of their homes.
