Social activists in the Russian city of Novosibirsk have succeeded in pressuring the local environmental prosecutor's office to launch an investigation into the regional vodokanal's (water company) handling of sewage in the area around the Siberian city.

The group, made up of local residents organizing online, was suspicious that local waterways were being polluted by raw sewage released untreated by the local water utility company, in violation of local and federal laws.
