Treated Wastewater Could Be Used to Recharge Groundwater in Dubai

Treated wastewater could be used to replenish Dubai’s depleting groundwater sources.  Dubai is exploring ways to make use of safely treated sewage water as part of a program to create an emergency reservoir of underground water. The Dubai municipality and Japan’s Hitachi Plant Technologies Ltd. have formed a joint venture and are carrying out a feasibility study for this pilot project. Under the agreement, a membrane bio-reactor system developed by Hitachi will be used to remove nutrients in the wastewater, so it can be used for industrial and agricultural purposes.
