KAMPALA, Uganda

Uganda’s parliament on September 9 passed a resolution ending the value-added tax (VAT) on piped water supply in an effort to increase access, especially among slum dwellers and other low-income consumers.

Uganda has been charging tax of 18 percent on piped water, the only Eastern Africa country to levy such a tax.
