USAID Funds Desalination Plant in North Sinai

Egypt’s North Sinai governorate inaugurated a new desalination plant in al Maswatiya district, the third to be built in the governorate by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  The other two plants were built in al Monbateh and Bir Beda districts. The three plants cost a total of $10 million USD. USAID officials said the new plant would significantly increase safe water supply to the remote northern region. They will provide 600,000 liters per day -- enough for more than 6,000 residents. “The plants, part of a cooperative project financed by the American people and implemented in partnership with the Egyptian government, are meeting the immediate needs of the people of Sinai,” said USAID Mission Director Walter North...
