  • The United Nations late last week denied Haitian claims for compensation in the wake of a cholera epidemic brought, widely believed to have been brought to the island nation in October 2010 by UN Nepalese peacekeepers.
  • The Chinese government has finally admitted to the existence of “cancer villages,” where decades of land, water and air pollution has caused the rates of cancer to be exponentially higher than they should be. The villages are typically located next to factories or polluted waterways, the largest source of the cancer-causing chemical pollution.
  • The Environmental Evaluation Commission in Chile’s Atacama region last week imposed a fine of some $250,000 on Barrick Gold’s Pascua Lama mining project over sanitation issues and violations of the company’s glacier monitoring plan.
