— Yemeni President AN Abdullah Saleh has announced his
country, one of the poorest in the
world, plans to develop nuclear
energy for peaceful purposes.
Yemen is looking to harness
nuclear power to generate electricity and to desalinate sea water
in order to meet the needs of its
growing urban population.
It also hopes to boost the country's
tiny industrial base, as well as
expand its energy resources in
light of Yemen's declining oil
production. Yemen's small oil sector
is negligible compared its richer
neighbor Saudi Arabia.
"The energy issue is a very important
issue, and it is the main force that
drives our developments," confirmed
Prime Minister AN Mohammed Mujur
