Dubai Plans Huge New Desalination Plant

— Dubai, the commercial hub of the United Arab Emirates, plans to build a power and desalination plant, one of the largest in the world, at an estimated cost of $12 to $15 billion USD. The state-run Dubai Electricity & Water Authority has invited international engineering companies to bid by June 10 for an initial contract to advise on building the complex, which is scheduled to produce 600 million gallons of water per day. The project is essential to meet the growing demand for electricity and water in Dubai, the financial powerhouse of the seven emirates that make up the UAE. The federation has the secondlargest economy in the Arab world, second only to Saudi Arabia, and its treasury is overflowing because of high oil prices...
