Nigeria: Supply From Gurara Dam to Start Next Month

— Water from Gurara Dam will be supplied to the Lower Usuma Treatment Plant starting next month. Project manager Malam Ibrahim Babbaji said work was moving ahead of schedule, and that the entire dam and 75-kilometer water conveyance pipeline would be completed by December 2007. Impounding of water for the dam started in July, according to chief engineer Carl Jensen. Jensen also said the spillway to discharge excess water from the dam to the Gurara River and the dam intake tower were nearly complete. The dam embankment has already been completed, he said. The overall Gurara project also includes a 30 megawatt hydropower plant and an irrigation system to cover 20 square kilometers, which are expected to be completed by December 2008...
