Hungarian Court Acquits Aluminum Plant Employees in Toxic Spill Case

A Hungarian court this week acquitted 15 employees of an aluminum smelting plant of criminal charges in relation to a 2010 toxic spill that killed 10 people, injured 150, and contaminated nearby rivers in what has is considered the country’s worst environmental disaster.The court in the western town of Veszprem ruled that executives and employees of the Hungarian Aluminum Production and Trade Company (MAL Zrt) had not been criminally negligent, since they “had no realistic and objective opportunity to discover the hazards that had formed” at the tailings reservoir at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar Zrt facility in northwestern Hungary...
