Michigan environmental regulators under Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have upheld a controversial permit granted to Nestle Waters North America under the previous Republican administration that allows the company to increase the amount of groundwater it extracts for bottling. Liesl Clark, director of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), has dismissed an administrative appeal seeking to overturn Nestle’s extraction permit in an administrative case originally filed by a conservation group and a Michigan tribe.

Michigan, US Conservation Group Files New Challenge To Nestle Water Extraction
A permit allowing Nestle to boost the amount of groundwater it pumps in the US state of Michigan has been formally challenged. Michigan Approves Nestlé Permit for Increased Water Extraction
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality approved a controversial permit Monday for Nestlé Waters North America to increase the amount of water it withdraws from the state’s groundwater table from 250 gallons a minute to 400 gallons. Despite vehement opposition to the permit from residents in Osceola County, where the Nestle well is located, and water activists across the state, the DEQ said the permit met the requirements of the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act.
