COLOMBO, Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government and the United National Children's Fund (UNICEF) on January 7 officially commissioned a new water supply system in Ampara district in Eastern Province.

Located in the 2004 tsunami-affected Thirukkovil area, the water treatment plant will provide safe drinking water to 38,000 people.

The project will cost $14.5 million USD and is funded by UNICEF.
