— Hundreds of residents of Bangladesh's capital defied a ban on public demonstrations to protest shortages of drinking water last month.

A dropping water table and lack of electricity to run water pumps has led to a serious shortfall of drinking water in Dhaka, a city of 11 million.

Some 86 percent of the capital's water supply comes from underground sources.
