ASTANA, Kazakhstan

The Syr Darya River flooded large areas of southern Kazakhstan in January, even though the Koksarai Reservoir, completed in 2010, should have been available to hold some of the river’s excess water.

The reservoir was designed to prevent flooding in the South Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda provinces in winter and to provide water for irrigation in the growing season.
