Haitians File Lawsuit Against UN Over Cholera Outbreak

Human rights activists representing five Haitian families filed a lawsuit against the United Nations in New York federal court on October 9. The lawsuit claims the UN is responsible for bringing cholera to Haiti through its peacekeeping officers stationed there after the devastating 2010 earthquake.Some 8,400 people have died as a result of the outbreak, and hundreds of thousands more have been sickened, according to the Haitian government.The activists say they had no choice but to try to sue the UN, because it had refused to provide any compensation to victims. However, the lawsuit is seen as a long shot, because the international body says it is immune from lawsuits stemming from damages its activities may cause...
