Costa Ricans March Against Expansion of Private Hydropower Projects

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica

On March 13 more than 23 community groups from across Costa Rica, as well as environmental organizations, students, and NGOs, held a demonstration in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, to demand water as a human right and protest the expansion of private hydroelectric projects.The march started at the National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA) and concluded at the Legislative Assembly.The protesters said private hydropower projects were proliferating in the country due to an expected increase in the percentage of electricity production private companies will be permitted to sell and export if the Electric Contingency Law is approved...
