Taiwan Strengthens Pollution Penalties

TAIPEI, Taiwan

Taiwan’s Executive Yuan last week passed an amendment to the Water Pollution Control Act that will allow any person or corporation illegally dumping toxic wastewater that consequently leads to any deaths to be sentenced to a prison term of at least seven years, with the possibility of a life sentence.The new amendment also raises the ceiling for illegal disposal fines from $20,000 USD to $669,000 USD, according to Executive Yuan spokesman Sun Lih-chyun.Violators will also have to return any profits they made by not properly disposing of their waste, Sun added.In addition, factories will not be allowed to intentionally dispose of their wastewater through unregistered pipes...
