Salt-induced land degradation -- a common occurrence in arid and semi-arid regions where rainfall is too low to maintain regular percolation through soil, and irrigation without a drainage system is the norm -- has decreased productivity on 20 percent of all irrigated lands worldwide, according to a new study from the United Nations University’s Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
