Opponents Warn of Environmental Damage From Laos’ Don Sahong Dam

Laos’s controversial Don Sahong Dam has the potential to cause serious ecological damage to the Mekong Delta, participants heard at a Mekong conference held in Vietnam’s An Giang Province this week.The conference was organized by Vietnamese environmental groups Green Innovation and Development Center (GreenID) and the Vietnam Rivers Network, along with delta authorities.The $720 million USD, 260-megawatt Don Sahong hydropower project would be located along a tributary of the Mekong that serves as a significant migratory fish habitat. Disruption from the dam construction could threaten some 100 fish species and, in turn, food security for the entire lower Mekong basin, according to dam opponents...
