Kenya Seeks El Niño Mitigation Strategies

An Intergovernmental Technical Committee established by the Kenyan government to study and recommend ways to deal with anticipated El Niño rains says the country needs about $15.5 million USD to protect itself from disasters linked to the downpours.The committee announced on September 21st that the government had already set aside about $5 million USD for emergencies. Additionally, the government is in the process of allocating around $2 million USD to each county government to help fight the negative effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.The funds will be used to purchase food, medicine, tents and transport, and the finance relocation of affected people and repair of roads and other infrastructure in the event of a disaster...
