Climate Change, Ethiopian Development Threaten Lake Turkana: Report

Heightened industrial and agricultural development in Ethiopia, alongside the effects of climate change, is threatening the survival of Lake Turkana in Kenya, according to a new report by international watchdog group Human Rights Watch.The report, “There Is No Time Left: Climate Change, Environmental Threats, and Human Rights in Turkana County, Kenya,” released on October 15th, warns that human activity in and around the Omo River in Ethiopia is not only a threat to Lake Turkana but “also pose[s] threats that could affect the realization of rights of the Turkana people.”“The combination of climate change, large-scale development, and population growth poses an urgent threat to the people of the Turkana region,” said Joseph Amon, health and human rights director at Human Rights Watch...
