Injuries, Arrests Reported in Latest Veladero Mine Protests

Several people were injured and dozens more were arrested late last week during protests against Barrick Gold’s Veladero mine in Argentina’s San Juan province.Violence broke out between protesters and police on October 23rd, after a court ordered local residents and environmental activists to end their blockade of an access road to the mine, Spanish news agency EFE reported.The protesters are demanding closure of the mine, a ban on future mining activity in the area, and reparations for damage from a cyanide spill at the mine last month.On September 12th, a valve failure in a pipe carrying cyanide at Veladero led to what Barrick Gold and local authorities initially called a “small” leak that briefly disrupted operations...
