Bracing for El Niño, Lima Utility Calls for “Responsible” Water Use

Warning that the El Niño weather phenomenon would likely affect water sources in the region, Peruvian utility Sedapal this week urged consumers in Lima and Callao to use water “responsibly.”The utility said in a December 15th press release that it had planned a “series of preventive measures to supply drinking water in the city (Lima)” in the face of two possible El Niño scenarios.In the first scenario, a sharp decrease in precipitation in the lower Rimac River basin could produce landslides in the Chosica and Santa Eulalia areas, hindering water uptake at the Atarjea water plant due to high turbidity in the river...
