Civil Society Groups Want US, ASEAN to Take Up Issue of Laos’ Don Sahong Dam

Environmental and civil society groups in the lower Mekong region are calling on the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address Laos’ Don Sahong hydropower project during talks with US President Barack Obama next week.Cambodian NGOs conveyed the request to US Secretary of State John Kerry during his visit to the country last month, Voice of America’s Khmer news service reported.The groups see the meeting, which will take place in California on February 15-16th, as an opportunity to seek US intervention or mediation on the issue of hydropower projects on the Mekong.ASEAN members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam...
