Kyrgyz Court Fines Kumtor Mine $98 Million for Environmental Damage

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan

The Bishkek Inter-District Court on May 25th issued a new ruling against the Kumtor Operating Company, a subsidiary of Toronto-based Centerra Gold, for environmental violations at its mine in the Issyk-Kul region. The court fined Kumtor $98 million USD for failing to pay the appropriate fees for dumping its waste rock.
