41.4 Million Need Food Aid in Southern Africa

Over 41.4 million people in southern Africa are food insecure, and 21 million require immediate assistance, according to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat.The figures came from the Regional Vulnerability Assessment Analysis, released in Pretoria, South Africa on June 10th.The analysis found that nearly 2.7 million children in the region were currently suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and the figure was expected to rise “if support to vulnerable population is not immediately provided.”SADC Director for Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Margaret Nyirenda said she was concerned about the situation and called on all member states and development partners to “act now, to avoid a further deterioration of the situation...
