Judge Dismisses $5.7 Billion Civil Suit Over Samarco Mine Disaster

A judge this week dismissed the $5.7 billion USD civil lawsuit against mining company Samarco’s owners, Vale SA and BHP Billiton, for the November 5, 2015 tailings dam burst at Samarco's iron ore mine in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, Vale reported.The lawsuit was filed by the National Humanitarian Society, Sohumana, last December. It demanded that the mining giants set up a fund to cover clean-up costs and damages.The tailings dam burst, which has been called Brazil’s worst-ever environmental disaster, killed 19 people and flooded surrounding areas with tens of millions of cubic meters of wastewater and sludge that subsequently flowed into the Doce River and down to the Atlantic Ocean...
