US Provides $11 Million to WFP for Drought Assistance in Haiti

The United States, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), this week provided $11 million USD to assist the World Food Program’s (WFP) emergency drought operation in Haiti.The funds will be offered as direct cash transfers to assist about 170,000 Haitians who are in greatest need for three months, the WFP said.Some 1.5 million people in Haiti are currently facing severe food insecurity due to three years of drought, exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon."Farmers have lost several consecutive harvests and many of them had to sell assets and go into debt in order to feed their families, which further increased their vulnerability...
