Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice this week suspended a $2.1 billion USD financial settlement between Brazilian national and state governments and mining companies Samarco, Vale SA and BHP Billiton over the tailings dam burst at Samarco’s iron ore mine in Minas Gerais state last November.Under a deal reached last March, the mining companies agreed to pay at least $2.1 billion USD over the next six years to compensate victims and restore the environment in the wake of the tailings dam rupture, which has been called Brazil’s worst-ever environmental disaster.But Brazil's Federal Prosecutor’s Office successfully petitioned the court to reinstate a $6...
