Brazilian Prosecutors Launch Criminal Investigation Into Samarco CEO

Brazilian federal prosecutors are investigating Roberto Carvalho, CEO of mining company Samarco Mineração SA, for environmental crimes related to last November’s deadly tailings dam rupture at an iron ore mine in Minas Gerais state.The prosecutors said in a statement on July 13th that Samarco had failed to fully implement emergency precautions ordered by the Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA). The company only partially implemented four of 11 measures ordered by IBAMA."The omissive acts of the chief executive could be categorized as environmental crimes," said the statement, quoted by the Reuters news agency...
