Ecuador Villagers vs Chevron: Latest Legal Front Opens in Ontario

The latest round of court proceedings in the ongoing compensation battle between Ecuadorian villagers and oil giant Chevron commenced last week in Ontario, Canada.Approximately 30,000 Ecuadorians are trying to collect on a $9.5 billion USD award — one of the largest ever to arise out of environmental destruction — they won against Chevron in Ecuador. Because Chevron has no assets in the South American country, the Ecuadorian villagers have turned to courts in several other countries in an effort to have the judgment enforced. The plaintiffs have filed lawsuits in the United States, Argentina and Brazil, as well as Canada, to get them to seize Chevron’s assets within their borders to enforce the Ecuador court’s judgment...
