Malaysian Government Extends Bauxite Mining Ban

The Malaysian government has extended its moratorium on bauxite mining activities until December 31st, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Wan Junaidi announced this week.“If come December 31 the stockpiles are not cleared, I’m going to ask for (another) six months moratorium,” he told a press conference on September 7th. The ban on bauxite mining was initially put in place due to concerns about environmental damage and inadequate regulation of the industry.It was first implemented on January 15th, and has already been extended twice -- first in April and then, last June, until September 14th...
