A Brazilian court has ordered miners BHP Billiton and Vale SA to pay $350 million USD for initial work to clean up environmental damage from the tailings dam burst at the Samarco iron ore mine in Minas Gerais province a year ago.The companies, which co-own Samarco, have six months to present plans to clean up the remaining waste from what has been called Brazil’s worst-ever environmental disaster.On November 5, 2015, the rupture of the mine’s Fundao tailings dam killed 19 people and flooded surrounding areas with tens of millions of cubic meters of wastewater and sludge that subsequently flowed into the Doce River and down to the Atlantic Ocean...
