Laos Seeks Permission to Build Another Hydropower Dam on the Mekong

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia

The government of Laos has submitted a new request to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) secretariat to construct a dam on the Mekong, the MRC said in a statement this week.The Pak Beng Hydropower Project, a run-of-river project located on the river’s mainstream in Oudomxay province, would have an installed capacity of 912 megawatts and would discharge 5,771.2 cubic meters per second, the MRC said.It said the secretariat would review the proposal over the next month, then forward it to the joint committee for consultation.The MRC had rejected two previous project proposals from the Lao government because they failed to meet the requirements at the joint committee consultation stage...
