BANGKOK, Thailand

A Thai government ministry has announced plans to levy a fee for wastewater treatment from visiting tourists to help fund new treatment facilities.

"Without an attempt to enhance treatment capacities, all canals and rivers will be ruined in some 20 years," Environment Minister Surasak Karnjanarat said last week at the Pollution Control Department, according to local reports.
