Scarcity Hits Mozambique Banana Production

MAPUTO, Mozambique

Mozambique’s major commercial banana producer, Bananalandia, in Boane district, about 30 kilometres west of Maputo, has seen production levels fall by half due to lack of water for irrigation. The banana plantations depend on water from the Umbeluzi river, which in turn depends on the level of water stored behind the Pequenos Libombos dam. Since water restrictions came into effect production has fallen by over 50 per cent, and the quality of the bananas produced has also suffered.
