Russia: 100 Hospitalized By Tainted Drinking Water In Daghestan, Criminal Case Launched


More than 100 people have been hospitalized in Khasavyurt, a city in the Russian republic of Daghestan, with officials blaming the city’s water supply. According to the Daghestani branch of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor), drinking water was determined to be the preliminary cause of poisoning. A spokesperson for Daghestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that a criminal case was launched on 25 March into a violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules, which led to the mass poisoning. According to him, the investigation is working to establish the circumstances of the incident, and that the investigation was being directed by the Prosecutor’s Office of Daghestan.
