The purpose of the $5 Billion USD funding in the initiative is to expand finance and technical assistance for marine economy projects. Key areas of focus for the 2019 to 2024 program include: protection and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems and key rivers, creation of inclusive opportunities in the sustainable tourism and fishing sectors, reduction of land-based pollution from plastics, wastewater, and agricultural runoff, and improvement in the sustainability of ports and coastal infrastructure development.
