Following meetings with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Egypt’s Housing Minister Assem al-Gazzar has confirmed the country’s interest in cooperation with the private sector for seawater desalination.
This cooperation is seen as part of the national strategic plan to achieve maximum benefit from available water resources and to improve services.
The bank expressed its interest in assisting the government to prepare a coherent strategy for drinking water and sanitation and to evaluate seawater desalination projects. The government and the bank also reviewed existing joint drinking water and sanitation projects currently being considered and coordinated with the housing ministry’s New Urban Communities Authority.
Heike Harmgart, EBRD's regional Managing Director said “We want to potentially prepare a number of desalination plants on a public–private partnership (PPP) basis in the same manner we prepared the 6th of October Dry Port Project which was recently awarded to a large private sector consortium".
