Treated Wastewater May Be Feasible And Safe For Aquaculture

A team of Israeli researchers have found that using tertiary treated wastewater (TTWW) for aquaculture purposes has minimal effects on fish survival, growth and immune functions, meaning it may be feasible for use in commercial aquaculture projects. The study tested the effects of organic micropollutants (OMPs) on carp growth in ponds containing 0%, 50% and 100% TTWW for five months. The team found that exposure to TTWW had no effect on fish health, with the presence of heavy metals in the fish muscle below maximal levels permitted by the EU and UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
